Patherkandi : 71 more residential houses and shops were demolished at Ichabeel Tea Estate and neighbouring Icharpar locality in Patherkandi circle of Karimganj district on theke second day on Sunday.
Administration carried out the demolition operation to clear atleast 1200 bighas of government and ceiling sutplus land in Ichabeel Tea Estate, owned by state run Assam Tea Corporation (ATC), and neighbouring areas which were encroached by the families without valid documents.
On Saturday the administration had demolished 90 residential houses with help or 20 excavators.
With this a total of 161 residential houses and shops were demolished and more than 7000 people became homeless, sources said. Many of them have taken shelter in the houses of their neighbours and relatives, but many have them pitched tent under the open sky. Led by Patherkandi circle officer Arpita Dutta Mazumder, other senior official including, DC (Karimganj) Mridul Kumar Yadav and SP Padmanabh Baruah were also present during the demolition drive.
The eviction drive on the second day was peaceful barring a few incidents, said a senior police official. However, during the second day, the officials saved a few houses from demolition after owners managed to show valid land documents.
The demolition drive will continue in five other adjoining villages where government land is encroached upon by settlers.
