Bangladeshi cattle thief escapes from BSF custody

Karimganj : A suspected cattle thief, who had illegally entered into Indian territroy via India-Bangladesh border in Karimganj district on Sunday night and was arrested by police, fled from the custody of border security force jawans after police handed him over to them.

Sources said the Nilambazar police based on a tip-off that cattle thieves from Bangladesh entered Karimganj via the international border, carried out an operation in Balia late on Sunday night and nabbed one cattle thief. Police saw some more cattle thieves trying to escape to the neighbouring country via the border and tried chasing them down after handing the arrested thief to the BSF jawans deployed in the border. After coming back, the police officials came to know that the arrested thief had escaped, sources said.

Nilambazar police station’s office in-charge Deepjyoti Malakar expressed his furry over the BSF jawans’ “carelessness”. Meanwhile, a sharp weapon and four buffaloes were recovered from the border area by the police, the sources added.
