Jeremy clinches gold, sets record in CWG

Staff Reporter, Aizwal : India’s weightlifter from Mizoram Jeremy Lalringa smashed two games records on his way to sensational gold medal win at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games as he added a second yellow medal to India’s tally on Sunday.

The 2018 Youth Olympic champion dominated the men’s 67 kg competition with a total lift of 300 kg, finishing ahead Samoa’s Vaipava Nevo Loane, who man aged a total of 293 kg.

The 19 years old from Aizwal wrote theke games snatch (140 kg) and overall lift (300 kg) record in his name but not before na injury scare his twice he grimaced in pain during the clean and jerk attempts. Jeremy opened up a huge 10 kg gap with the nearest rival Edidiong Joseph Umoafia when he lifted 140 kg on a successful second attempt. He had begun with 136 kg.

Jeremy further targatted 143 kg on his final attempt, but dis noy succeeded. In Clean and Jerk, the 2021 common wealth champion began with 154 kg and followed that up with 160 kg, but could not complete the 165 kg attempt.

Meanwhile PM Modi congratualted Jeremy on winning Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
