Assam University Researcher Qualifies for Antarctica Expedition

Silchar, Aug 26 – In a landmark achievement for Assam University and the entire Northeast region, Abida Choudhury, a former physics research scholar from the university, has qualified for an upcoming scientific expedition to Antarctica.

Choudhury, who completed her PhD in Physics under the guidance of Professor Atri Deshmukhya, earned her place on the mission after successfully completing a rigorous acclimatisation programme at the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Mountaineering and Skiing School in Auli, Uttarakhand, from August 11 to 22, 2025. The high-altitude training was designed to prepare participants for the extreme challenges of Antarctica — including sub-zero temperatures, harsh winds, and long periods of isolation.

Her strong academic background in physics and research expertise is expected to make significant contributions to the expedition’s scientific objectives, thereby strengthening India’s role in polar research.

Officials of Assam University hailed her selection as a historic milestone for the institution and the region. They highlighted that Choudhury’s success showcases the growing presence of researchers from Northeast India on the global scientific stage.

This achievement not only brings pride to Assam University but also serves as an inspiration for young researchers and scholars aspiring to make their mark in frontier scientific explorations.
