Seven spider monkeys, two lemurs rescued on Cachar

Silchar : Seven spider monkeys and two lemurs, which as per police were smuggled from outside India, were rescued from Debipur under Dholai police station in Cachar district late on Sunday night. Debipur falls near the Assam-Mizoram interstate border, around 54km from Silchar town.

Cachar SP Numal Mahatto told reporters on Monday that a team of police, based on specific information, visited Debiprasadpur late on Sunday night and rescued the primates including seven red-faced spider monkeys and two lemurs from a secluded place. Initial investigation has revealed that the animals were being smuggled from outside India and an international animal smuggling racket is involved in that.
